POPULAR 1838-D HALF EAGLE GRADED AU50 BY PCGS
Winter 1.
Its status as the very first half eagle to be made at the new mint in Dahlonega, as well as being a widely-recognized one-year type, has long made the 1838-D half eagle one of the most popular issues of any denomination produced at this facility. While not especially “rare” in terms of the total known, a solid AU50 is a coin that has a far greater demand than supply and it is this simple rule of economics that has made price rise somewhat dramatically upwards for 1838-D half eagles in the last decade.
This is an AU53 coin which has been net graded by PCGS on account of some old marks on the cheek. There is some luster on both sides and the naked-eye appearance is good.
Two PCGS/CAC AU50 examples of the 1838-D half eagle have sold at auction since 2020, and they brought $22,200 and $24,000.
