PCGS/CAC AU55 1860 CLARK GRUBER $2.50

K-1, R-4.

The Denver firm of Clark, Gruber & Co produced an impressive array of gold coins in a host of denominations ($2.50/$5/$10 and $20) in 1860 and1861. Mintage figures were high but survival rates have proven to be low and today, any issue from this Territorial mint is highly collectible. With around 100 or so known in all grades total, the 1860 is very slightly scarcer than its counterpart, the 1861 Clark, Gruber & Co. quarter eagle.

This piece shows nice natural medium reddish-gold color and is well struck. The circulation this coin saw was produced gentle wear with a virtual absence of detracting marks seen on either side.

No 1860 CG $2.50 in PCGS/CAC has sold at auction. In 7/2022, Heritage sold a non-CAC in AU55 for $9,600 while they also sold a coin in the same grade—again, minus a sticker—for $9,000.

An outstanding example and good value at his price point.

CAC has approved three in this grade with nine finer.
