FULLY STRUCK NGC/CAC 1842-O QUARTER EAGLE
The 1842-O is among the scarcest quarter eagles from New Orleans. Around 75% of the coins that exist are seen with strikes that range from about-average all the way down to wretched. The example offered here is among the sharper 1842-O quarter eagles I have seen with nearly full details at the centers; a bit of weakness at the right leg is barely noticeable.
The color of this coin is delightful with deep russet and purplish-gold hues seen on both sides. This is what is sometimes referred to as “leather pouch” toning, and while I can’t guarantee where this coin has been stored, I am 100% positive that this color is original and about as nice as on any 1842-O quarter eagle I’ve ever seen.
Stack’s 2024 ANA: 5598 brought $6,600 and was also a PCGS/CAC AU58 but the color was not as nice as on this example.
With the next step up in grade running $12,500-15,000+ this AU58 is a solid value, in my opinion.
CAC has approved eight in AU58 with just two finer.
