VERY RARE 1869 $2.50 IN COPPER

Judd-769 (High R-7; only three or four known). Regular dies; struck in Copper.

This is not a die trial as it was almost certainly struck by the mint to sell to interested collectors. Other 1869 quarter eagles exist in off-metals, including aluminum and nickel, and all are very rare.

This piece is a Gem which—in my opinion—is brown and not Red and Brown. This is almost certainly the reason why it didn’t pass at CAC, but does it really matter on a coin this rare?

Exactly two APRs are recorded for Judd-769 in the last 20+ years and both are for this coin.

A neat adjunct to a quarter eagle set!

Ex Heritage 2025 ANA: 4188, where it sold cheaply at $6,300, and earlier Heritage 9/2020; 10241 at a more realsitic $9,000. Originally in the Bob Simpson Collection.

“If it was good enough for Bob, it is good enough for you…”
