ULTRA-POPULAR 1838-C $2.50; GRADED VF30 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC
Winter-1, HM-1.
Its status as a first-year-of-issue as well a being a short-lived two year type have guaranteed the 1838-C a very high level of demand. Just 7,880 were made and in AU and finer grades, this issue is scarce and expensive and this makes affordable examples such as this PCGS/CAC VF30 among the most desirable of all quarter eagles made at the Charlotte mint.
The obverse is choice with nice reddish-gold color surrounding the deep green-gold center; the reverse has less extensive and slightly lighter reddish-gold hues at the inner border. The obverse is clean and choice for the issue while the reverse shows some faint marks at the upper field over the eagle’s head. The mark on Liberty is the result of a foreign object on the dies when the coin was struck and it is seen on many 1838-C quarter eagles.
No PCGS/CAC 1838-C in any grade less than EF40 has ever sold at auction. In May 2024, Heritage sold a PCGS/CAC EF40 (with a gold sticker that was undeserved in my opinion) for $15,600. A yucky PCGS EF40 brought $5,040 in a March 2020 auction for $5,040.
I doubt if another PCGS/CAC 1838-C quarter eagle is currently on the market for less than $10,000.
PCGS has approved 2 in this grade with 17 finer.
