SCARCE FIRST-YEAR-OF-ISSUE PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1877-S $20.00
The 1877-S is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Type Three $20 made at the San Francisco. As with all of the Type Three San Francisco double eagles through 1882, this issue is seldom seen finer than MS63.
This fresh, 100% natural example has lovely rich orange-gold color shading to reddish-gold on the obverse. There are a few too many assorted small nicks on both sides fort his coin to be in an MS63 holder but the color no doubt bumped it up to an MS62+
IN 2022, Stack’s Bowers sold strong PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1877-S $20s for $7,200 (8/2022), and $9,000 (4/2022).
This coin is priced to reflect the current market for Type Three double eagles.
CAC has approved 26 in MS62 (including a small number in 62+) with only six finer.
