HISTORIC 1854-S $20, NGC AU55 ex Granite Lady Hoard
This issue is numismatically significant as it is the very first federal double eagle produced at the fledgling San Francisco mint. Examples with non-seawater surfaces are scarcer than those which have matte-like luster from exposure to seawater. Until a few dozen of these came out hiding as components of the Granite Lady and Fairmont hoards, 1854-S double eagles with choice, non-matte surfaces were almost never seen and they commanded high premiums.
This green-gold example is 100% original with nice even dark green-gold color which is somewhat unusual for the issue, as many 1854-S $20s are seen with orange-gold and reddish hues. The obverse is scuffy, but less so than other 1854-S double eagles in AU55 and the detail is excellent.
The last two APRs for AU55 1854-S double eagles are both at $17,400; one was for a PCGS coin in 9/2023, while the other was for an NGC coin in 8/2023.
