CHOICE, FROSTY PCGS MS62 1853 US ASSAY OFFICE OF GOLD $20.00
K-18, R-2.
If you had a a large-sized gold coin on your person in San Francisco during 1853 and early 1854, the chances were good that you were carrying one of these: the then-ubiquitous 1853 US Assay Office of Gold double eagle. Due to a pressing need for high denomination coins in the inflation-driven economy of Gold Rush San Francisco, huge numbers of these were issued and there at least 500-750 known in a variety of grades.
This piece is extremely frosty and from the standpoint of luster, it looks more like a 63/63+ than a mere MS62. Housed in an older holder, this piece has excellent overall eye appeal; even considering how nice this issue comes.
A 2/2023 APR for $21,738 is the most recent sale for the variety in this grade.
