VERY CHOICE PCGS/CAC 1877-CC $20.00 GRADED AU58
Until the discovery of a relatively large number of 1877-CC double eagles in overseas banks, the numismatically significant 1877-CC (the very first Type Three issue from Carson City) was rare in AU58, and very rare in Uncirculated. It is easy to locate today in AU58, but not so much with the look that this choice, lovely example displays.
There is no wear visible but this properly graded AU58 has some bag friction on the obverse high spots as well as some scattered shallow marks in the obverse fields. Both sides show extremely attractive fiery orange-gold highlights over a green-gold base.
Heritage 2/2025; 3468, graded PCGS/CAC AU58, brought $19,800 and it lacked the deep toning shown on my coin. Stack’s Bowers 11/2024: 3212, also in PCGS/CAC AU58, brought $22,800.
With PCGS/CAC MS61 examples worth close to $50k, and PCGS/CAC MS60s essentially unavailable, a nice AU58 such as this seems like a very sensible purchase for 95% of all CC double eagle specialists.
CAC has approved 23 in AU58 with eight finer.
