RARE CIVIL WAR ISSUE PCGS MS64+ 1863 GOLD DOLLAR

Among all the gold dollars struck at the Philadelphia mint, the 1863 is the second rarest trailing only the low mintage 1875.  Less than 100 exist in all grades with maybe as many as 30 or so known in all MS grades combined.

Examples are not often seen above MS63 to MS64 with the two finest being the PCGS/CAC MS68 Duckor/Akers/Brand coin which sold for $193,875 in 2015, and the equally superb PCGS/CAC MS68 that I sold to a Chicago collector in 2024 for $192,000.

This coin is tantalizingly close to being a full-blown Gem as it has rich frosty luster and lovely medium green-gold color. It has never been cleaned or in any way numismatically altered, and the eye appeal is absolutely top notch for the grade. A few light copper spots on the lower left obverse are mint-made and are not detracting.

This exact coin (see below) is the sole PCGSMS64+ to ever sell at auction, while a splotchy PCGS/CAC MS65 brought $23,540 as Heritage 2023 ANA: 3147, and $26,400 when it first sold as Heritage 2022 ANA: 3827
