ONE OF JUST 11 1865-S DOUBLE EAGLES FROM THE SADDLE RIDGE HOARD
According to the Saddle Ridge Hoard Census, only 11 examples of this date were found. Six were No Grades, one graded EF40 and four graded AU53. To the best of my knowledge this is one of just two of the AU53 1865-S double eagles from the hoard that were approved by CAC.
For collectors of hoard coins, the Saddle Ridge double eagles are an interesting area. Most are dated 1889-S and 1892-S and the pre-1870 dates exist in very limited quantities. Many were cracked out of the original holders due to be conservatively graded
The coin itself is very pleasing and I grade it solid AU55.
For the right specialized collector, this is an important piece.
