CONDITION CENSUS PCGS/CAC MS64+ 1893 $20

The 1893 is common in grades through MS64, but it remains extremely rare in Gem. I can recall just two which I regarded as being really exceptional; an NGC MS66, and another graded MS67 by NGC that brought $69,000 back in 2009.

This bright orange-gold example has just a few small ticks in the left obverse field and some stacking friction on Liberty’s face. It will never grade MS65, but it is clearly finer than your run-of-the-mill MS64 1893 double eagle.

Three CAC approved PCGS MS64+ 1893 double eagles have sold at auction since 2022, with all three eclipsing the five figure barrier; one brought $16,800 in May 2023, another brought $10,800 in March 2023, while the nicest realized $20,400 in April 2022.

CAC has approved 20 in MS64 with an unknown number in 64+. Only one finer coin—a PCGS MS65—has been approved.
