1873-S CLOSE 3 $20 GRADED MS62 BY PCGS

The Close 3 variety of the 1873-S double eagle is more available than its Open 3 counterpart. As recently as a decade ago, it was very scarce in MS62 and essentially unavailable finer. Today, it is somewhat available in MS62 (the PCGS population in this grade has risen from 42 pieces to 62 since 2014), but it remains very rare in any grade higher.

The surfaces on this frosty rose-gold example show some scattered scuffs on the obverse, but this coin is still cleaner and more eye appealing than all but a handful of non-CAC PCGS 62s of this issue. Some weakness of strike on the reverse should not be mistaken for wear.

Six different 1873-S Close 3 double eagles have sold at auction since the start of 2020, with a low of $8,700 (5/2022) to a high of $14,400 (12/2022).

With just three coins graded higher than this at PCGS, you aren’t likely to encounter a finer 1873-S Close 3 $20 than this.
