PCGS MS62 1872 $20: SELDOM SEEN FINER
Very few examples of this dtae saw much circulation but due to rough handling, virtually all 1872 double eagles are seen in the AU55 to MS61 range. In MS62, this date is a challenge, and I can’t personally recall having seen more than two or three in MS63 or finer. The finest known by a large margin is a lovely NGC MS64 which sold for $69,000 as Heritage 2007 ANA: 2026; it would likely be a six-figure coin if offered today.
This piece has superior luster and color with thick, pillowy mint frost below nice rose-gold color which is deepest at the obverse edge from 8:00 to 11:00. As on virtually every known 1872 $20, the surface are scuffy but less so than on most. Only a group of marks below stars four through six on the obverse are detracting.
There have been just two auction sales for this date in PCGS MS62 since late 2018. The most recent was Stack’s Bowers 3/2023: 5316 at $10,800, while a CAC approved coin brought a robust $16,800 as Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5316. There are APRs of over $10k for this date in PCGS MS62 as far back 2000 (!).
The availability of this coin in flashy but hacked-up MS60 and MS61 belies its conditional scarcity in MS62.
Ex Heritage 12/2017: 3304 where it brought $9,900.
