HIGH END PCGS/CAC MS62 1871-S $20
This date has seen its rarity in high grades severely impacted by the Fairmont Hoard, as well as other groups of coins which have been sourced from overseas. A decade ago, PCGS had graded 22 in MS62 with two finer. Today, the population in MS62 has more than doubled with 46 graded, as well as five finer.
This is a coin which was located prior to the release of the Fairmont coins and as a result, it doesn’t have the dark, crusty look that these pieces exude. Light to medium rose-gold surfaces are semi-reflective and the obverse is extremely clean with a full “63” appearance. On the reverse there is a rather deep mark (possibly a mint-made strikethrough) at the top of the right (facing) fleur-de-lys which is not easily seen due to its location.
While there are 10 APRs for the 1871-S $20 in PCGS MS62 since the beginning of 2020, only two have been approved by CAC: this exact coin (see below), and another which brought $11,400 as Stack’s Bowers 2023 ANA: 1364.
CAC has approved 12 in MS62 with only three finer.
Ex Stack’s Bowers 11/2021: 3405 where it brought $16,200.
