PCGS MS61 1858-S $20.00

The 1858-S has not had its rarity in higher grades profoundly changed due to shipwrecks, as did the 1856-S and the 1857-S. It is scarce in the lowest Uncirculated grades, rare in properly graded MS62, and extremely rare in MS63.

As with many examples of this date, the surfaces have an almost “glossy” appearance which is unique to the 1858-S. Both sides are lightly marked and the color is rose-gold at the centers framed by rich lemon-gold at the border. Some friction can be seen on the high spots of the obverse but, in my opinion, this coin is properly graded.

The last three PCGS MS61 1858-S $20s to sell at auction brought $6,900 (8/2023), $7,500 (11/2022), and $9,600 (4/2022).

With nice PCGS MS62 1858-S double eagles worth around $35,000, this nice MS61 seems like really good value.

Ex: Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 6395 where it brought $9,600.
