SCARCE AND UNDERRATED 1854 SMALL DATE $20 GRADED MS62 BY PCGS

This variety is legitimately scarce in properly graded MS62 with just eight recorded by PCGS and a scant three finer. Interestingly, there are no auction trades ever noted for a PCGS graded 1854 Small Date in MS63 and finer. Despite this fact, the price for this scarce issue is not significantly higher than it is for the far more common 1851-1853 P mint issues.

This piece has a really wholesome appearance with attractive natural orange-gold seen at the obverse border and less so on the reverse. The luster is frosty and unmolested, and while there are a few more scuffs in the fields than one would hope to see on a coin in this grade, in my opinion, MS62 is accurate for this specific piece.

Just two PCGS MS62 examples have sold since 2005, with the last sale being Heritage 12/2018: 4324 at $13,200.

This impressive 1854 Small Date qualifies in the Condition Census, and unless you can handle a long wait and a $35,000+ price tag for a PCGS MS63, this is likely going to be your best shot at a superior quality example.
