APPEALING PCGS MS62 1851 DOUBLE EAGLE

MS62 is the grade for 1851 double eagles which straddles the line between available and unavailable, as evidenced by the fact that PCGS shows a population of just 21 in MS63 and finer, and this certainly includes a number of regrades. The PCGS population of 68 in MS62 also seems inflated by resubmissions, as the number of coins in this grade sold at auction each year averages around one or two at most.

This is a very appealing example with a fresh, frosty appearance. The strike is sharp and the yellow-gold surfaces lack the copper spotting or grease stains found on many otherwise choice 1851. The luster is excellent and there are just a few small ticks seen in the left obverse field.

There have been three PCGS MS62 examples of this date sold at auction since the start of 2020, and all three were CAC approved. The most current sale was Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5362, at $15,600. In the last decade, only a single PCGS MS63 has sold and it was a non-CAC piece which brought $24,000.

For many advanced collectors of Type One double eagles, this represents the most realistic quality for this date, given the scarcity and the high price of any 1851 graded higher.
