POPULAR 1856-S GOLD $1, PCGS/CAC AU53
S/S variety, designated by PCGS.
The 1856-S is the most popular of the seven gold dollars produced at the San Francisco mint. It is the only Type Two gold dollar from this facility and while not really rare, collector grade pieces are seldom seen with good color.
This is a very choice example with attractive deep, even russet color seen on both sides. There is not quite enough luster to assign an AU55 grade but the surfaces are pleasing and the detail is satisfactory.
The last PCGS AU53 1856-S gold dollar with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $2,938 as Stack’s Bowers 2013 ANA: 5037.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 37 finer; please note that their census doesn’t break down the numbers approved according to variety.
