1873-S HALF EAGLE GRADED AU53+ BY PCGS
This is one date which has been impacted by the Fairmont Hoard more than many others, as it isn’t a popular enough issue to survive the introduction of five nice PCGS/CAC coins since late 2020. However, I still believe that a choice AU like the one I am offering here remains a good value at under $5,000.
This natural light russet example is lustrous but has just a few too many ticks on the obverse to call it a full 55. I generally hate the 53+ grade but, in this case, I feel that it is merited.
This is the sole PCGS/CAC AU53+ to ever sell at auction (see below) while a PCGS/CAC AU53 brought $4,320 as Stack’s Bowers 11/2021: 3292.
CAC has approved five in AU53 (including this one in 53+) with seven finer.
