SCARCE CAC APPROVED NGC EF45 1865-S HALF EAGLE

The 1865-S is the most obtainable of the five San Francisco Civil War half eagles but it is still a scarce issue with fewer than 100 known in total. Very few of the survivors in the EF and AU grades are CAC-worthy, as most have been processed and/or display detracting marks from a rough sojourn in commerce.

This is an extremely pleasing example for the date and grade with totally natural deep russet and green-gold color over lightly abraded surfaces. The grade is totally accurate in my opinion as there isn’t quite enough “meat” to call this a 50, but there is far more eye appeal than you’d see on a 40.

Two PCGS/CAC EF45 1865-S half eagles have recently traded with one selling for $6,300 in March 2021, and the other realizing $5,640 in July 2020. An NGC/CAC EF45 brought $5,875 back in August 2014.

If I were collecting Liberty Head half eagles, I’d want all of my better dates to look like this coin!

CAC has approved five in this grade with five finer.
