The 1857-D is an underappreciated date which is scarce in properly graded EF45 to AU53 and rare in grades higher than this.
Here is a textbook EF45 example of this date with a little less detail one might expect due to strike peculiarities associated with this date but with enough "meat" to easily achieve the assigned grade.
The only CAC approved EF45 from PCGS to be sold at auction went for $2,938 as Heritage 2017 FUN: 6794. In September 2022, a nice PCGS EF40 in an old green label holder was sold for $4,080.
This would make a good addition to a nice date set of D mint half eagles.
CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 19 finer.
