RARE NGC/CAC AU55 1862-S QUARTER EAGLE

The 1862-S is tied with the 1863-S as the rarest Civil War quarter eagle made at the San Francisco mint. Of the 8,000 struck, fewer than 100 exist. This date is rare in properly graded AU55 and AU58 grades, and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with as few as three or four extant.

This lightly worn example is very lustrous and it shows nice light rose-gold color on both sides. The strike is typical for the issue with a fairly sharp central obverse but with weakness on the eagle’s right leg. There are a few small ticks visible in the fields but this piece is wholesome and far above average for the date and grade.

Only four AU55 1862-S quarter eagles have sold at auction since 2012, and all are PCGS coins lacking CAC approval. The most recent sale is Heritage 1/2022: 3914 at $5,160 and this piece was not especially choice.

This date is missing from most collections of Liberty Head quarter eagles and this is likely the best 1862-S which will be available in some time.

CAC has approved two in AU55 with five finer.
