POPULAR 1845-O $2.50 GRADED EF40 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC
Variety 1.
The 1845-O is far and away the rarest quarter eagle from New Orleans. Only 70-80 exist from a mintage of 4,000 and this date is especially hard to locate in collector grades with solid eye appeal.
This deeply toned example show rich orange-gold hues changing to magenta at the borders on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and nearly perfect; what appears to be a scratch in the inner right obverse field is a die defect seen on virtually all 1845-O quarter eagles.
Only three PCGS EF40 1845-O quarter eagles have sold at auction since May 2008 and none were approved by CAC. The most current record is $6,463 by Heritage 9 /2016: 4463 (for an undergraded coin in an old holder) while a nicely toned piece brought $4,025 back in March 2011.
This is an especially charismatic coin which represents uncommon quality and eye appeal for the date and grade.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 17 finer.
