RARE PCGS/CAC VF35 1842-C QUARTER EAGLE

The low mintage 1842-C is unquestionably one of the scarcest Charlotte quarter eagles, and it is an especially hard coin to locate with good eye appeal and natural surfaces.

This deep green-gold example shows a typical strike with weak centers and some weakness on the stars but it has the body and appearance of an EF40. The surfaces are choice for the issue with just a thin, old diagonal scratch on the obverse deserving of a mention.

No PCGS VF35 1842-C quarter eagle has sold at auction since Heritage 5/2008: 2981 which realized $2,990. Interestingly, no PCGS EF40 has sold at auction since late 2012.

Serious collectors of Charlotte quarter eagles are well aware of the scarcity of this issue.

CAC has approved one in this grade with 12 finer.
