SCARCE AND POPULAR PCGS/CAC EF45 1841-D QUARTER EAGLE
With a mintage of just 4,164, the 1841-D ranks as one of the scarcer quarter eagles from this mint. I regard it as comparable to the 1842-D, but not as rare as the 1840-D. Most 1841-D quarter eagles show considerable wear and this issue is known for its lack of originality and its problematical surfaces.
This example is a very choice coin for the grade with natural deep green-gold and russet hues on the obverse and the reverse. The strike is very sharp with no areas of weakness seen at the centers. There are a number of small, shallow ticks on the surfaces with the only one worthy of mention being located over the top arrowhead on the reverse.
Only two PCGS EF45 1841-D quarter eagles have sold at auction since 1999, with the most recent being a very low-end example that sold cheaply for $4,600 as Heritage 3/2010: 2059. The only other sale was Heritage 2/2005: 7552 which realized $5,175.
This date is missing from most collections of Dahlonega quarter eagles and there are very few nice, fresh pieces available at this price point.
CAC has approved three in this grade with four finer.
