CHOICE AU 1839-O $2.50
HM-1, R-3. Wide Fraction. Housed in an old holder and seemingly choice for the assigned grade by today’s standards.
This issue is numismatically significant as it is the first quarter eagle (and the first gold coin of any denomination) from the newly-opened New Orleans mint, as well as being a one-year type. It is readily available in circulated grades, but nice pieces with good color and choice surfaces are always in demand and not often seen.
This piece has medium russet centers which are contrasted by a deeper reddish-gold hue at the borders; the reverse is more richly colored. Some dirt can be seen in the recesses and there is some luster on either side. This well struck example has good overall eye appeal with minimal marks seen, mostly in the left obverse field close to Liberty’s mouth.
A CAC approved NGC AU53 1839-O quarter eagle brought $4,700 as Legend 12/2019: 571. A CAC approved NGC AU55, which wasn’t much nicer than the present coin, brought a strong $8,100 as Heritage 6/2021: 91098.
This issue is the most popular quarter eagle struck in New Orleans and nice AU coins such as this are always in demand.
CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 32 finer.
