AFFORDABLE COLLECTOR GRADE 1831 QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

BD-1, R-4.

Around 100-125 examples of this date exist. As with the other dates of the popular Capped Head type (1829-1834), this issue saw little circulation, and as a result, lower grade pieces are exceedingly difficult to locate. There are just a small number of collector grade examples for the entire type and even fewer with nice original color and choice surfaces.

This was likely a pocket piece as it displays more wear than on 1831 quarter eagle I have personally seen. However, it is still decently defined with clearly detailed hair and feathers and the color is a warm green-gold. The surfaces are very clean and this piece was clearly well taken care of during its in the wild.

No 1831 quarter eagle graded EF has sold at auction since 1994. In September 2019, a PCGS EF45 1830 quarter eagle which wasn’t approved by CAC sold for $9,000.

While certainly not inexpensive, this is about the lowest priced example of this type that you will be able to locate with CAC approval and good overall eye appeal.

CAC has approved this one example in this grade with 12 finer.
