SCARCE 1804 $2.50 GRADED EF40 BY PCGS/CAC

BD-2, R-4.

There is no such thing as a “common date” Draped Bust quarter eagle, and even the more available issues such as the 1804 14 Reverse Stars are scarce with fewer than 100 known in all grades. There are probably few than 50 known for the entire type in EF grades, and this number can be split in half if the collector is seeking a nice CAC-approved coin.

This medium green-gold example lacks any notable circulation marks and is well-defined at the centers and borders save for the left obverse rim from 6:00 to 10:00. Some light adjustment marks are seen on the upper left reverse edge but they are mostly hidden by the holder’s gasket. Using a 5x loupe, a few wispy lines can be detected on the obverse but hey are hard to see with the unaided eye.

No PCGS/CAC 1804 $2.50 in EF40 has traded at auction with the exception of this coin, which brought $18,766 at a Great Collections sale a few years ago. Heritage 3/2014: 30206 sold for $15,863 and was a nice non-CAC EF40 with some detracting planchet flaws on the obverse.

If you have searched in vain for a presentable Draped Bust quarter eagle which costs less than $20,000 here is a rare opportunity to acquire such a coin.

CAC has approved 12 in this grade with 16 finer.
