The 1871-S is a reasonably available date in the lowest Uncirculated grades. It becomes scarce in properly graded MS62, and it is very rare in MS63 and finer.
This totally original example is lightly abraded and very frosty with fewer marks than normal for the date and grade. It has nice warm color and very good luster which combine to make it appealing overall.
The most recent APRs for CAC approved PCGS MS61 examples of this date were $6,400 in January 2022 by DLRC and an earlier record of $6,000 as Stack’s Bowers 6/2020: 1343.
For most specialized collectors, this will be a perfect Type Two double eagle for a date set or even for type purposes.
