CHOICE SSCA#1 1856-S $20, PCGS/CAC MS62

Variety 17-Q, No Serif, High S. SSCA #5649. Housed in the original gold-label holder.

Significantly fewer 1856-S double eagles were recovered from the SSCA shipwreck than there were for the 1857-S. These have always brought a nice premium relative to the 1857-S, and they are popular companion pieces for collectors who get bitten by the Shipwreck Bug.

By today’s grading standards, this coin appears to be at least a full point undergraded. It is very clean with nice bright yellow-gold color and rich, frosty luster. The strike is razor sharp and the eye appeal is above-average for the grade.

Since the start of 2019 there have been 10 sales at auction for the 1856-S $20 in PCGS/CAC/SSCA MS62. Prices have ranged from a low of $9,988 (7/2020; not in the original holder) to a high of $12,000 (2/2019). In March 2023, a PCGS/CAC MS62 which was not from the SSCA brought $14,400

In my opinion, this is the ideal grade and price point for an SSCA #1 1856-S double eagle.

For this specific die variety, CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer (both MS63).
