VERY CHOICE PCGS/CAC 1877-CC EAGLE GRADED VF35

The 1877-CC eagle is a very scarce issue with likely no more than 60-70 known in all grades. It is slightly rarer than the 1878-CC and the 1872-CC eagles, and slightly more available than the pricey 1873-CC and 1879-CC issues. Eye appeal is a real problem for the 1877-CC as nearly every example I have seen has been cleaned or brightened.

This coin is ridiculously nice for the assigned grade and to my eyes, it looks like a solid EF40. The surfaces are clean and the color is exceptional with natural russet contrasted by splashes of rich reddish-gold in the recesses. As always, there is some weakness of strike at the centers. As you look at the accompanying images, note the sharpness of the feathers which are awfully strong for a VF35. Couple this with some remaining luster on either side and you have one heck of a coin for the date and grade.

No PCGS VF35 1877-CC eagles have sold at auction since 2010. In December 2021, Legend sold a PCGS VF30 for $9,106, and from the online images that coin looks at least 10 points more worn than the piece I’m offering here. The same is the case with the PCGS VF30 which realized $8,700 as Heritage 1/2021: 4719.

It would be difficult to locate a nicer 1877-CC eagle than this at this price point and I strongly recommend it to the advanced collector.

CAC has approved 1 in this grade with 8 finer.
