RARE PCGS AU50 1869 $10

Only 1,830 business strike 1869 eagles were made and this is a rare issue in any grade with an estimated 60-70 known. There are perhaps a dozen known in About Uncirculated grades with virtually all of these showing very negative eye appeal as a result of harsh cleaning(s), deep abrasions and overly bright Prooflike surfaces.

This example is totally fresh to the market and it is extremely pleasing for the date and grade. Unlike virtually every known 1869 eagle, it hasn’t been “improved” and this is evident by the attractive natural russet color seen on both sides. The surfaces are frosty as opposed to reflective which is uncommon for the issue and there are no marks which are out of keeping for the assigned grade.

A PCGS AU50 sold very cheaply for $6,000 as Stack’s Bowers 11/2022: 7244 while a pair of PCGS/CAC AU53s from the Fairmont Hoard sold for $12,000 and $12,600 in two different 2022 auctions.

It is difficult to imagine a more undervalued issue than the 1869 eagle and this date is rare both from an absolute and condition rarity.
