The 1868-S gets no love from most collectors but this is a scarce date with fewer than 100 known from an original mintage of 13,500. It is mostly seen in EF40 to AU53, and Choice AU coins are rare. I am aware of three to five 1868-S eagles which grade AU58 and there are none in any Uncirculated grades.
This piece, which is likely from the source of the Fairmont Hoard, has a choice obverse but it shows some well-hidden but detracting marks on the upper reverse.
This exact coin is the only PCGS/CAC VF35 1868-S $10 to ever sell at auction.
CAC has approved this one example in VF35 with 11 finer.
