The true rarity of this date has finally been universally acknowledged, and the 1859-S is a highly desirable No Motto issue which is in strong demand even in F/VF grades.
This piece is slightly undergraded by today’s standards and it would likely return as a VF25 if it were sent in for a regrade. The surfaces are very clean while the strike shows some weakness on the eagle’s wings.
Since this coin was sold for $4,818 in May 2018 (see below), a PCGS/CAC F15 brought $4,880 in September 2018, and a PCGS/CAC F12 realized $5,400 in March 2023; it had earlier sold for $4,920.
An affordable example of a legitimately scarce date.
CAC has approved this one coin in VF20 with four finer.
