POPULAR 1839 HEAD OF 1838 $10: A NICE PCGS AU53
Two varieties of eagle exist for coins dated 1839: the more common variety I’m offering here with the same head type used before in 1838, as well as the considerably scarcer Head of 1840.
This example is really nice for the grade with lovely natural honey-gold color which tends slightly towards a richer reddish-gold hue at the central obverse. The surfaces show the expected small marks common to this variety but nothing is overly deep or too annoying to live with. Very close to—if not in—the CAC approval range for this issue and far nicer than most which have been scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed.
There has been but a single piece graded AU53 by PCGS since mid-2017, and it brought $7,800 in late 2022; that coin was very nice but it had a detracting cut in the left obverse field.
I think the early P mint eagles remain outstanding value and this 1839/8 would make a very solid type coin or it could fit well into a date set of Liberty Head eagles.
