POPULAR 1799 EAGLE GRADED AU55 BY PCGS
BD-8, R-5. Small Obverse Stars.
The 1799 is the most common early eagle but it is far more popular than the comparable 1801 and 1803 issues due to its status as the most affordable 18th century ten dollar gold piece. It is reasonably available in the higher AU grades but most seen in 55 and 58 holders have been noticeably lightened or even scrubbed.
This coin has been off the market for at least three decades. It is frosty and undipped with considerable "pop" seen on both sides. The color is an appealing medium yellow-gold which changes to a reddish-orange hue in the open areas of the reverse. There are a few marks seen on the face of Liberty and some others between the tips of stars 11 and 12 on the obverse. The reverse is very choice and would grade a full AU58 on its own.
The last PCGS AU55 Small Stars obverse eagle to sell at auction brought $21,600 as Stack’s Bowers 3/2023: 3230, and the present coin is nicer and a scarcer die variety to boot. Another PCGS AU55 brought $28,800 as Stack’s Bowers 8/2019: 4020 sale, but it was an R-7 variety.
This is a much nicer than average example for the grade and it rivals others I have seen graded AU58.
