There were 3,900 business strike 1877 gold dollars made. Gems are available as contemporary collectors, dealers and hoarders put back a number of coins.
This piece is prooflike on the obverse and it is am bit more frosty on the reverse. A mint-made chip in the planchet below the ED in UNITED and some slight roughness in the upper left obverse field are likely the reasons as to why this coin wasn’t graded MS65 by PCGS.
Two PCGS/CAC MS64 and one PCGS/CAC MS64+ have sold at auction. The highest APR is $2,640 which occurred in April 2022, while the “plus” coin sold a bit cheaply in May 2023 ($2,340) due to some toning.
