CAC APPROVED PCGS AU55 1859-C GOLD DOLLAR
The 1859-C is one of only two Type Three gold dollars. It is a scarce and under-appreciated issue which is not often seen in the higher circulated grades with choice surfaces and natural color. In Uncirculated this issue is very rare.
This coin is totally fresh to the market and, in all honestly, I was kind of hoping it would grade AU58 when I submitted it to PCGS. The coin shows rich yellow-gold color and there is considerable mint luster seen on both sides. The strike is typical for the issue with inconsistencies of detail found at the centers and the borders, but most of the important details, such as the date and the mintmark, are fully defined.
A PCGS/CAC AU53 sold for $5,880 as Heritage 3/2022: 92557. The coin offered here has considerably more luster and it is clearly finer.
In my opinion, nice AU 1859-C gold dollars are very undervalued.
CAC has approved six in this grade with four finer.
