CHOICE PCGS/CAC AU58 1857-S GOLD DOLLAR
I can’t think of a more overlooked gold dollar than the low mintage 1857-S. Around 120-140 exist from a mintage of 10,000, and this issue is scarce in properly graded AU55/58 and very rare in Uncirculated.
This is an especially nice example for the grade with substantial amounts of mint luster below natural green-gold, orange and rose shades. There is one superfine scratch on the obverse which juts out from Liberty’s chin; otherwise the surfaces are without faults.
This exact coin (see below) and one other are the only PCGS/CAC AU58s to have sold at auction.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with four finer.
