CAC APPROVED PCGS AU50 1857-D GOLD DOLLAR IN AN OLD HOLDER
Housed in a Generation 3.1 holder and graded between 1993 and 1998.
The 1857-D has always been the most overlooked Type Three issue from this mint. It is difficult to find a nice, original AU and this date is very rare in Uncirculated (and unknown finer than MS62).
I grade this coin AU58 net AU55 by today’s standards. It is well defined and very frosty with lovely natural green-gold color which is not often seen on this issue. There are a few old shallow lines on the right obverse which cause me to net grade this coin as an AU55 but it has terrific eye appeal for the issue and an almost total lack of evident wear.
Heritage 10/2021: 3270 brought $9,000. It was graded AU53 by PCGS and approved by CAC. It had better color than the coin I’m offering here but not as much detail or luster.
This is an uncommonly attractive coin for the date and grade.
Ex Heritage1/2020: 5132 at $4,440.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 15 finer.
