CHOICE 1850-D GOLD DOLLAR IN AN OLD GREEN LABEL HOLDER

Variety 2-C.

The 1850-D is the second rarest Type One gold dollar from Dahlonega, trailing only the 1854-D. It is scarce in properly graded About Uncirculated and it is infrequently seen with original color and choice surfaces.

This piece is housed in an old green label holder and, in my opinion, it is a solid AU55 by today’s standards. It is well struck (save for the central reverse) and attractively toned with wholesome natural medium russet shadings on either side. A scuff below the star at 11:00 on the obverse is difficult to see unless the coin is tilted.

In their January 2020 auction, Heritage sold a different PCGS/CAC AU50 1850-D gold dollar in an old green holder for $3,960. It was less original than the present piece and had inferior overall eye appeal. In the Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA sale, a PCGS/CAC AU55 which almost looks like a twin to my AU50 was sold for $6,600.

This 1850-D would fit nicely into a high quality set of Dahlonega gold dollars and it is not easy to locate a significantly finer example.

CAC has approved three in this grade with 14 finer.
