GEM XF45 1850 MOFFAT $5, PCGS/CAC

K-7, R-4.

The firm of Moffat & Co produced half eagles in 1849 and 1850. It appears that tens of thousands were made, as both are among the more available California issues from this era.

This is a 100% original Gem XF with immaculate surfaces and lovely deep, natural russet color. In my opinion, it is nicer than an EF45 and if it were lightened up a bit, you would be able to see a substantial amount of mint luster on both sides.

No CAC approved EF45 examples of this issue have ever sold at auction, while in the 2022 FUN sale, a PCGS/CAC AU50 brought $11,100.

Nice Pioneer in the $7,500-15,000 range has never been as in demand than it is now, and coins such as this 1850 Moffat half eagle are hard to buy and easy to sell.

CAC has approved six in EF45 with 22 finer.
