THE FINAL-YEAR-OF-ISSUE CHARLOTTE GOLD COIN; AN NGC AU53 1861-C $5.00

After years of neglect, branch mint gold aficionados have finally come around to liking this important issue. The 1861-C is the very last coin made at the Charlotte mint. It is often compared to the 1861-D—a more expensive and better-known issue—and while it is more available in circulated grades, the 1861-C is actually a substantial rarer date in Uncirculated.

This piece shows a typical somewhat mushy strike but I think that NGC got this one right in terms of its grade. The overall appearance is not “fresh” enough for it o pass muster at CAC, but it is a legit AU53 with tons of luster seen beneath even deep orange-gold color. Both sides have scattered shallow ticks which are consistent with the grade.

DLRC sold an NGC AU53 for $25,000 in April 2023, while there is a $28,800 APR for a PCGS AU53 back in July 2021.

With decent EF45 examples now bringing in the mid-teens, this coin seems well-priced
