HIGH END NGC/CAC AU55 1858-C HALF EAGLE: PERFECT FOR TYPE
This coin almost assuredly saw no commercial use but it has enough bag friction and surface abrasions that it has been properly net graded as an AU55. It has 100% unmolested surfaces with rich natural orange-gold color. It is most likely not an ex Fairmont coin as it lacks the dirt and grime seen on most of the Charlotte half eagles from that source.
Three Fairmont coins—two graded AU55 and one AU55+ by PCGS and approved by CAC—have sold since late 2022 and they brought $8,700 (8/2023;this was the “plus” coin), $6,600 (3/2023), and $7,200 (11/2022). I personally like this NGC coin more than the two PCGS 55’s but not as much as the 55+.
Due to a lack of rarity premium and its lovely appearance, I strongly suggest this 1885-C for the type collector seeking a single nice half eagle from the Charlotte mint.
CAC has approved 18 in this grade with 11 finer.
