1808 half eagles are seen with an 1808/7 overdate as well as the more available normal date. AU coins are plentiful but the majority of available pieces in this range are low-end; the result of having been cleaned or chemically abused.
This is a choice original coin which shows some reddish-pink color in the protected areas. A few shallow ticks in the left obverse field are mostly concealed by the depth of the natural toning and some luster is visible on both sides. There are fairly pronounced mint-made clashmarks on the reverse, especially below the right side of the ribbon beneath UNUM.
This exact coin (see below) is the sole AU55 1808 half eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction. A PCGS/CAC AU58 realized $16,800 as Heritage 5/2023: 5095.
CAC has approved three in AU55 with 28 finer.
