If you are a finicky collector you are aware of the true scarcity of this issue in AU58 and finer with a CAC-quality appearance. Think its common? Then explain why the current CAC population is just four in AU58 with two finer (both in M62).
This medium honey-gold example has the distinction of one of the very few 1847-D half eagles which remain with natural color as most have—sadly—been stripped. A few small coppery toning spots are seen on the obverse border and these actually enhance the appearance, in my opinion.
The Fairmont hoard contained a single PCGS/CAC AU58 1847-D half eagle and that sold for $9,600 as SB 4/2022: 5048. No other examples have sold.
Ex Stacks Bowers 2024 ANA: 3341 where I bought this coin very reasonably at $7,800.
CAC has approved four in AU58 with just two finer.
