After decades and decades of obscurity, this one-year type has become one of the single most popular Southern gold coins. The 1839-D half eagle has shown to be scarce in nearly any grade, and the supply of nice coins is well outstripped by the high level of demand.
This coin is in an old green label PCGS holder. By today’s grading standards, I see it as an AU50 net EF45. The coin is bright and frosty and it shows an extreme amount of luster for an “EF40.” The surfaces on both sides are abraded with the single most serous marks positioned in the upper left obverse field, as well as a single noticeable one direct behind the eagle’s neck. The overall “look” is a bit more commercial than what I usually handle, but this a nice PCGS/OGH 1839-D half eagle that checks a lot of boxes for 95% of all the Dahlonega collectors out there.
No PCGS EF40 has sold since 2109, while Stack’s Bowers sold a decent PCGS EF45 for $10,800 in their 2022 ANA sale.
Considering that you'll likely have to spend another three to five years waiting for a nicer 39-D $5 than this, I think you ought to give this coin serious thought.
