GEM PROOF 1899 QUARTER EAGLE WITH HEAVY CAMEO APPEARANCE
A total of 150 Proof 1899 quarter eagles were made and there are around 75-85 known today. This includes a small number of Superb gems with three in PR68+ DCAM and a mind-blowing PR69 DCAM which is imaged on the PCGS Coinfacts site.
The black and white appearance of this coin is really impressive and it must be seen in hand to truly appreciate it. I grade this coin a solid PR66 DCAM but there is no motivation for me to resubmit it as a high end PR65DCAM and a PR66DCAM are valued similarly based on current APR’s.
No PCGS PR66DCAM’s have sold since 9/2019 ($20,400) while the latest NGC APR is from early 2022 ($18,500). In 7/2022,a PCGS PR66DCAM without CAC approval brought $19,200 while an NGC/CAC PR66Ultra Cameo brought $24,000 in early 2019.
If you are looking for a wonderful piece of Proof gold and you crave a 19th century date versus a 20th century issue, you should give this exquisite 1899 quarter eagle serious consideration.
