PCGS AU53 1851-C $2.50
The 1851-C is a better date in he Charlotte quarter eagle series. It is not often seen finer than AU53 to AU55, and it is an extremely rare issue in Uncirculated with no more than six to eight currently accounted for.
This piece shows excellent luster and detail for this issue and-in my opinion—is more closely resembles an AU55 in hand than the current AU53 grade. Splashes of rich magenta color are seen on both the left and right obverse field while the reverse is a pleasing blend of old, warm green and orange-gold hues. Some shallow, well-scattered marks on the obverse fields are likely what kept this attractive 1851-C quarter eagle from winning the CAC lottery.
Since the middle of 2021, just a single PCGS AU53 1851-C $2.50 has sold at auction. Offered as Heritage 10/2021:44083, it sold for $4,800. While approved by CAC, it sowed pronounced mint-made roller marks at the central obverse and the reverse which I found to be very detracting. Stack’s Bowers sold a nice PCGS EF45 in 6/2022 for $4,440.
